AIMM develops tunable hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) materials for industrial wastewater treatment. HPCs are a porous charcoal and thus a direct drop-in replacement for conventional activated carbon (AC) systems. However, HPC’s tunable nature (porosity, surface chemistry, etc.) enables them to remove up to 200X more contaminants, such as dyes, at ultrafast sorption speeds of 5-15 seconds, rather than hours for AC. Their tunability also broadens their ability to treat various PFAS, including short-chain PFAS which AC struggles with. The company is commercializing technology developed at the University of Dayton and is currently focused on pilot-scale deployment.
